Task Forces

Teachers Put Agriculture Back in SchoolPS.jpg

In addition to advocating for agri-business needs in the media, the CWA also appointed its members to lead state and local task forces to address the goals of the CWA organization. Some of these tasks forces included: a Legislative, Religious, Academic, Consumer, Environmental, Agricultural, Federal Government, and a State Legislation task force. Here is a brief description of each task force:

The Legislative Task Force’s main focus was to serve as a liaison to educate urban legislators about the concerns of farmers. Furthermore, members of this committee developed an “adopt a legislator” program, testified at hearings and spoke to the media as women, farmer’s wives, and consumers.

The Religious Task Force was comprised of women from various religious backgrounds who became members of the policy-making committees at their respective places of worship, educating congregations about the impact of agriculture on their family’s lives.

The Academic Task Force worked with local schools by collaborating with teachers to educate youth about the agricultural industry with puppet shows, coloring books, films about agriculture, and integrating youth in Farm-City Week activities.

The Consumer Task Force educated consumers about agriculture by planning tours to local farms, meeting consumers at fair booths, organizing Supermarket Saturday, and providing consumers with brochures filled with information about healthy food choices, food and the economy, and food safety.

The Environmental Task Force worked with the legislative chairperson to concentrate on issues about pesticides, water, and air quality. Members of the Environmental Task Force also testified at the local and state level on behalf of the CWA.

The Agricultural Task Force worked almost entirely in response to the UFW concerning related strikes and boycotts.

The Federal Governmental Task Force worked to monitor proceedings in Washington D.C., to do letter writing, and to the keep CWA members informed in the Compass newsletter and at CWA board meetings.
