Von's Grape Boycott

The CWA also protested at Vons supermarkets in June of 1989, and again in 1991 for banning the sale of grapes in their stores. The UFW argued that pesticides used on the grapes were dangerous for their laborers. In response, the CWA circulated flyers and petitions to convince the public not to support the UFW and urged CWA members to send letters to legislative officials stating, “Chavez has coerced (black mailed) Von’s markets into not advertising California table grapes. This could spread to other grocery chains and other types of produce.” Furthermore, CWA members argued that consumers deserved equal access to information on prices, quality, and availability of all products in the stores.
